Today in class we met in the forum to discuss dour high school careers with the guidance councilors. They covered many different aspects of our high school life. We learned how to average our GPA and how many credits we need in each school category. We learned about different aspects colleges require for students wanting to attend a certain college. We then asked any questions we had that regarded anything with graduating and coarse credits. All of the information we learned today can be found on the Arapahoe web page.

Hi!

Things we did:

  • Today we had a talk about our self assessments yesterday. Smith was impressed! She reminded us to look at the rubric while doing it and that if we didn't have every piece of the "3" category, we were a 1/2.

  • We talked about ways to feel more in control of summary response writing. Smith said it would be a good idea to come in during off hours and discuss feedback in order to get a better grade. She talked about the importance of coming in and self-advocating.

  • We talked about being overwhelmed and Smith said that our classroom was a safe space and if we're feeling crazy overwhelmed, just say so. Also, no question is stupid.

  • Smith said to watch the Seinfeld episode "The Airing of Grievances."

  •  We read Othello Act 2 Scene 3

Homework:
       1. Re-evaluate your self-assessment based off the rubrics, which can be accessed in your google drive

       2. Othello S/R act 2 due thurs/fri

Today we started class by discussing how we can help become more in control of our learning. One idea we discussed was scheduling an appointment with Smith about questions or concerns you have with assignments we are doing in class. You can meet with her if you have any questions regarding anything that happens in the class. If you need to schedule a meeting, you can find Smith's planner in her backpack and schedule it, or you can email her. Another thing you can do if you are to busy before or after school and you don't share a common off hour, you can schedule a time with Smith to Skype and discuss any questions. Also bring up questions in class by simply raising your hand. We also went over our self assessments we completed yesterday. After that, we continued reading Act 2 Scene 3 in "Othello". We will start our Summary Responses in class tomorrow.

Memorizing each word is highly recommended Othello notes: Iago is working with Rodengo Iago wants to be the 1st lieutenant and Roderigo is in love with Desdemona. Othello is secretly married to Desdemona Iago is now the ensign/ ancient Brabantio(the senator) is Desdemona’s father Cassio is the 1st lieutenant Othello is colored and dishonored the senator’s family. When Othello and Desdemona’s marriage is discovered, they are described as animals. Referred to as animals. Iago and Roderigo shout to Brabantio to tell him that his daughter is secretly married. They referred to Othello and Desdemona as animals. The story made it seem like Othello had “stolen” Desdemona’s virginity. Had students act out/ read out the script

Checked out Othello (see Mrs. Smith if you missed class)
might need your student id to check out a book

after we checked out Othello we worked on our summaries and responses
indicate and work with partner in post
if you finish you can post it on your blog
Summary Response Outline

Summary:
  • Topic sentence: title, author, strong verb, main idea
    • Bully, by Lee Hirsch, demonstrates the harsh reality of what occurs in a bullied child’s life, like the constant and endless harassment, a loss of feelings, and even a choice to take one's life.

Supporting ideas and explanations to prove main ideas
    • Bullying can be change lives for the worst, or end them.
      • In the Documentary, 7 different victims of bullying, 2 of them had taken their own lives and several others had tried and failed at taking theirs
    • Bullies constantly physically, mentally and emotionally abuse their victims for any reason they choose.
    • Some people are bullied so much that they assume that they never have been bullied and accepted it as their life

Response:
  • Topic sentence: title, author, strong verb, agree/disagree (correctly portrays/ incorrectly portrays) because ___________ .
      • In Bully, by Lee Hirsch, acknowledges the awful physical, mental, and emotional aggression and correctly portrays how horrible and deadly is/can be.
  • Claim 1:
    • Set-up In smaller and schools, the bullying epidemic is fatal. Kids are bullied so badly that they have killed themselves because of how severe the abuse became.
    • Evidence: Lead-in  “ quotation” (  I, iii, 233-236  ) Ty Field, age 11, made the decision to take his own life. The superintendent said, “There is no indication that bullying was a factor”, while Ty’s friends stated that it was the entire reason.
    • Explanation of quotation to prove claim
  • Counterclaim 1: However, in the documentary, it was stated that bullying is everywhere all over the world and at one point, everyone has been bullied.
    • Set-up This statement is somewhat of an exaggeration. Bullying is not as common as it seems in many places. Although some places suffer from extremely severe bullying epidemics, other places have either very minor bullying or none at all.
    • Evidence: Lead-in  “ quotation” (“Bible Belt Oklahoma,” has to endure locker signs saying “Faggots aren’t welcome here.”)
    • Explanation of quotation to prove counterclaim
  • What are the strengths/ flaws of this argument?
  • Concluding sentence: restate main idea
Although there are some overstatements, Bully very accurately shows the harsh nature of bullying and abuse that modern children have to go through every day.
