  2. @Colin Yes, the acts of rebellion in the books were justified because they rightfully stood up for their beliefs, and acted in ways to improve the society. They understood the element of freedom, and fought for rights of all people.

  3. @Josh No, I don't think that the Founding Fathers predicted such change in the constitution, especially because they never experienced the change that we are capable of. They thought that the morals they created would have stayed as a base of our country.

  4. @Class How do these books truly affect us? After learning about the negativity within technology, how are we still able to trust using our personal devices?

  5. @Piper By saying, "technology is powerful and it can be controlling depending on the way that you use it", how do you know you're using it right? How does this explain the different perspectives in modern day?

  6. @Ashley The main problem with surveillance is the thought of others seeing things you considered private, especially without knowing they are inspecting you. Also, it is human nature to need privacy, and when violated people feel uncomfortable and violated.

  7. @Class Which characters among the three books exemplified the most violence, and how does this affect the way you view them as a reader?

  8. @Jordan The society in 1984 would be the worst place to live because they can control you completely. The thought of mental defeat (brainwashing) is one of the most frightening elements in George Orwell's society. Also, they seem to have exceeded the acceptable amount of control far beyond the other two settings.

  9. @Spencer I would define Marcus as a freedom fighter over a terrorist because he takes a stand for what he believes, and doesn't use complete violence to achieve freedom. Also, his intentions are good, and will positively help other people too.

  10. @Schmidt Yes, Little Brother was a very effective extension of 1984 because it gave us a more modern and realistic vision of our society if we turn to communism.

  11. @Spencer I believe that our society is very close to the one in Little Brother. If a major terrorist attack occurred in the US, or in Colorado, then we would most likely have a very similar result. We rely on technology very heavily, and track US citizens just like in LB.

  12. @Riley I think that the endings are similar that Winston and Marcus both return to society, but Little Brother has more of a happy ending because Marcus stays with Ange and the prison is shut down. But in 1984 Winston and Julia are both brainwashed into loving Big Brother and the Party stays in power

  13. @Ashley I think that Marcus' motivation was to help society. I believe that it was mostly to help society though. If he was solely focused on helping himself, then he wouldn't have put himself at risk by starting then Xnet and sparking a rebellion.

  14. @Class How far do you think the Severe Haircut Woman would have gone in torturing Marcus had he not been rescued? Do you think that they may have killed him eventually? Or possibly released him again?

  15. @Spencer I would define Marcus as a freedom fighter to the kids who were involved in the Xnet, but then a terrorist to most adults and the government. There isn't much difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter except which side they are on and what they are supporting.

  16. @Jordan I think Little Brother's society would be the worst to live in as a teenager. The teenagers were the ones who were suspected of terrorism and brought to the prison to be tortured and questioned. Also, the society within Little Brother made many mistakes in their accusations against people, partly due to the Xnetters hacking.

  17. @Zach I think freedom is something you have to take for yourself because freedom is based on one's own definition. If you define freedom as being able to talk about whatever you want, whenever you want, then you need to try to get the ability to speak freely. But not everyone thinks of freedom as the same thing so everyone needs to try to get freedom based on their own definition.

  18. @Ashley The idea of being in a society with lots of surveillance worries me because of the possibility of false accusations such as the ones seen in Little Brother. It is very simple to edit security footage or information to the point that you seem like a criminal or terrorist.

  19. @Josh No, I think that they wrote the Constitution as clearly as they possibly could, hoping there would be no room for misinterpretation or 'loopholes'. But with our society's need for more security, the government is constantly finding ways to create laws and rules that shouldn't follow the regulations originally set by the Constitution, but still technically follow the law. Just like the law in Little Brother, they couldn't track people, so they just track the books people carry.

  20. @Class Do you think that it is possible for Marcus' society to return to the way it was if there was another terrorist attack? Or would the police officers/security officers make more justified accusations and cause less damage to the people in the society?
